Methodology and sources

Limits, filing fees and claim forms are compiled by GetSmallClaims from each state's small claims court rules and published court fee schedules; they are the same figures shown on each state's guide page. Attorney, appeal and statute-of-limitations columns come from our 50-state comparison. Limits are the general limit for individuals - some states set lower limits for businesses or for particular claim types. Fees are typical ranges and often vary by county and by amount claimed. Blank cells mean we do not have that field for the jurisdiction.

Court rules change. Always confirm the current limit, fee and deadline with the court before filing. This is general legal information, not legal advice.
